You can actually a lot of times get away with pulling down the highlights using a simple power window over the whole area, without “keying” anything. If anyone knows how to fix that, please let me know.) I uploaded a screenshot to dropbox to illustrate this but unfortunately the Resolve forum isn't showing the image, even though I "shared" it in dropbox. While it is entirely possible they are using a RED camera, my suspicion is that they are using a "regular" camera on a mechanized slider and then capturing the same scent at two different exposures. Is there not a way in resolve to create a mask based on luminance? I don't think that those would have been masked out by drawing around them, would they? For example, in many of the scenes, there are complicated shapes like leaves from indoor plants or window blinds / shades that are moving. However, I think that it is more than just a simple masking. I will have to familiarize myself with how RED does HDR. The footage is moving slow and predictably enough that any “masking” of these areas using tracked windows would be super simple. If the footage was shot on an HDR capable camera like the RED (using the “X” frame track in the R3D), this is a very simple task.
